Sheldon Chalet

Place:

Alaska, United States

Placemakers:

Don Sheldon

Ethos:

An unbelievably remote immersion into the untouched wilderness of Denali National Park

Amidst a sea of ice on North America’s tallest peak lies a single structure: the Sheldon Chalet, perfectly perched atop a rocky outcropping in the snow. Enclosed by endless mountains, immense glaciers, and vast skies, it’s not hard to see why some call this the most remote hotel in North America.

Every journey here begins with a breathtaking helicopter flight over the majestic landscape of the Alaska Range. Pristine valleys and towering peaks give way to a truly one-of-a-kind destination: a chalet all but embedded into its surreal, untouched surroundings.

With a private chef, concierge and team of mountain guides for each stay, guests are given ample support to experience the alpine beauty however they desire. From scaling mountain walls to picnicking on top of peaks, the casual adventurer and adrenaline seeker will be equally satisfied. As the nearby Ruth Glacier expands and contracts with the seasons, it opens up new portals and dimensions to be explored: guests are often the first humans to step foot inside these caverns.

The hexagonal design of the property ensures uninterrupted vistas of Denali from each of five rooms, with awe-inspiring views from every window. Complete with outdoor decks and a helipad that doubles as an observation platform, it’s the perfect location for late-night aurora viewing. It’s difficult to describe the difference in gravity experienced while on property, perhaps only summed up by a common refrain heard from guests: “life-expanding.”

The visionaries behind the Chalet – the Sheldon family – are the only private landowners within the boundaries of Denali National Park. Their relationship to this terrain spans back to before Alaska was a state: trailblazer Don Sheldon first arrived in the 1930’s, and returned after WWII to run Talkeetna Air Service with his wife, Roberta. They operated eight speciality aircraft, serving Native villages, remote hunters, fisherman, and miners, while providing support for mountain rescues and countless first ascents on Denali.

Upon inheriting the nunatak in 2014, Don and Roberta’s children – Kate and Robert – undertook the project of constructing the Chalet after they found a set of blueprints dating back to 1968. Undoubtedly woven into the fabric of this generational dream is their parents’ pioneering spirit, unwavering commitment to conservation, and passion for exploration.
