Nimmo Bay

Great Bear Rainforest, British Columbia, Canada
Placemakers:
The Murray Family
Ethos:
An off-the-beaten-path retreat with unfettered access to the natural world.
In the early 80’s when Craig and Deborah Murray set out in search of a simpler way of life, they settled on the wild west coast of British Columbia with their young kids in tow. The quiet, remote wilderness of the Great Bear Rainforest held exactly what they set out to find: an invitation to coexist in harmony with their surroundings.
From ancient forest to rugged coastline, Nimmo Bay offers the same tranquility they discovered forty years ago – though what began as a quaint fishing lodge has since evolved into a world-renowned wilderness resort. The lone development in the area, and accessible only by air and sea, Nimmo Bay is a remote retreat with unfettered access to the natural world.
Still family-owned, half of the property floats on the bay while the other half is grounded on a small outcropping of land alongside a natural stream and waterfall. Nine private cabins provide a pampered home-away-from-home experience.
Life here centers a oneness with nature. Witness local wildlife paw for breakfast along the shoreline, revel in adventure on a whale-watching excursion, visit a 10,000-year-old glacier on a helicopter ride, or dip into the Pacific after a sauna session on the floating wellness dock. Meals are often locally foraged, highlighting wild vegetation and ingredients caught on that day’s free dive.
With local environmental and conservation efforts stemming back to the property’s beginning, the Murray family has been able to continue sharing their dream of living off the land while minimizing their footprint on the environment. A place to pause, rest, and nurture connection to what matters most, Nimmo Bay stays true to the ethos that birthed it all those years ago: sometimes a wild escape is the best way to journey within.
