From concrete parking lot to vibrant eco-resort
What happens when a group of entrepreneurs from different sectors decide to re-wild a parking lot?
The result — Basecamp Ijmuiden — is a vibrant eco-resort just a walk away from one of the wildest beaches in the Netherlands. Developed alongside a nature reserve, what was once a piece of concrete has been reclaimed into a blossoming, green, and even edible landscape dotted with tiny homes.
Basecamp has a vision of hospitality guided by reverence for the environment, and it shows. Every tiny home is placed organically throughout the property to mimic the unique shapes of the natural world. There’s nothing cookie cutter about the property — with 19 different layouts that make up their 33 houses, no one is exactly the same. Designed thoughtfully from the inside out, the decor feels upscale, cozy, and warm while prioritizing use of natural, recycled, and upcycled materials.
Guests are welcome to harvest vegetables and herbs from the on-property Greenhouse where the Basecamp Green Team experiments with growing organic plants; the shared terrace is the perfect place to enjoy the sea breeze over a coffee or kombucha from their Tiny Bar.
A place to slow down and re-connect with nature, the resort itself overlooks a lake and sand dunes while serving as a home base for exploration. Borrow a bike and keep your eyes peeled for wild horses in the nearby Zuid-Kennemerland National Park, or walk to the beach to learn the art of Blokarting (beach sailing).
Leading by example when it comes to their mission, the property generates and stores all electricity from wind and solar sources, collects and re-uses water whenever possible, and chooses products that cause no environmental harm while minimizing waste. A stay here not only invites you to immerse yourself in a beautiful place, but ensures you’re a part of protecting it, too.
