Basecamp Amsterdam

Place:

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Ethos:

A quiet, green oasis offering a new way to experience Amsterdam.

In the midst of the busy bike lanes and bustling waterways of Amsterdam, a green oasis offers a quiet reprieve from the overwhelm of the city: this is Unbound Amsterdam. It is one of the resorts of Basecamp Eco-resorts—a growing company developing sustainable resorts at stunning locations worldwide.

Located on the edge of the Dutch countryside, this sprawling resort – with 41 tiny houses and hotel suites – prioritizes a harmonious relationship with nature from design to experience. The lobby and cabins are elevated on poles to minimize disruption to the natural surroundings; this unique elevation gives a different perspective to the mostly flat environment, while offering sweeping views of the abounding green landscapes.

High-end design informs bespoke interiors, with loads of natural light and unique features within each individual suite – think: private hot tubs, outdoor pizza ovens, and sunny decks. Inspired by Japanese Tatami mats, the lodges showcase a tatami pattern in the tiles and facade, with a seamless connection between inside and outside spaces. On the whole, the resort is laid out to provide a unique blend of privacy and community, making space to both turn inward or to meet like-minded people.

A place to unwind, connect, and focus on well-being through oneness with nature, the focal point here is rejuvenation of mind and body. The heart of the property – The Wellness Garden – offers a floating barrel sauna, plunge pool, sun deck, and lakeside shower; it’s also the perfect place to take a cold dip in the lake and relax with a book on their secluded beach.

With an on-site vegetable garden managed by a local farm cooperative, the property emphasis on health resonates down into the soil – high-quality produce, pollinator-friendly plants, and flowering hedges add to the lush environment while providing ingredients for the hotel restaurant.
